Building Emergency Procedures

General Emergency Procedures

See UA's In Case of Emergency page for a complete, detailed list of emergency procedures.

See also UAL Safety Reference - In Case of Emergency for additional emergency procedure information.

Emergency Layout Maps

Emergency Building Layout Maps can be found at the links below:
Main Library Emergency Building Layout
WSEL Emergency Building Layout

These maps show the locations on each floor for the following:

  • Emergency Exits
  • Shelter in Place locations
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Duress Buttons
  • AED Kits

Duress Button Procedures and Locations

Duress/Panic Buttons are a discreet and quiet way to contact the Police in the event of an active threat to safety. Please see below for information on when and when not to use the buttons and how they work.

Locations:

Main Library

  • 1st Floor
    • One at each AskUs desk under the left side (total of four)
    • Inside the Tech Tool Shed on the side of the student lockers near the key lock box
    • Two in A122 near the main exits
    • One in B104 across from Admin Assistants desk at the supply cabinets
  • 2nd Floor
    • One at each AskUs desk under the left side (total of two)
    • Inside CATalyst Studios under the front desk on the right side

Weaver Library

  • 1st Floor
    • One in Rm102 under the cabinets on the right side of the office, next to the copier
  • 2nd Floor
    • One at each AskUs desk under the left side (total of two)
    • One in the WSEL Supervision Office (Rm209) to the left of the computer monitors

Duress/Panic buttons are NOT meant to replace calling 9-1-1, they are only to be used when discreet action is needed to avoid escalating or alerting a threat to police action being taken. In situations not needing discretion, calling UAPD or 9-1-1 directly will be quicker and more effective.

When to use the buttons:

  • Active Shooters
  • Active Assaults or person(s) threatening violence
  • Robberies in-progress
  • Weapons-related incidents (Actively wielding weapon in a way that conveys a threat, simply having a weapon on them does not constitute an active weapon threat)

When to NOT use the buttons:

  • Incidents that are NOT an immediate threat to public safety
  • Rude/disruptive patrons
  • Non-violent crimes such as theft, loitering, or trespassing
  • Incidents that are not on going
  • Suspicious persons/items

Directions for use:
  1. Press and hold both grey buttons for about three seconds, the light on the alarm will flash. There will be no sound.
  2. Amerx will contact UAPD, delay of two - five mins.
  3. UAPD will always respond to the location of the alarm.
  4. An attempt to contact the closest land-line phone to the alarm will be made. They are checking for a possible false alarm, they do not expect staff/students to pick up in the event of a real situation and UAPD will come no matter what.
    •  All available units respond to the alarm, lights and sirens on
    • Officers may have weapons drawn when entering the area
False/Accidental Responses:
  • Answer the Phone
  • Describe yourself: Give name, location, title, and your physical description to the dispatcher
  • Exit: Use the closest and most obvious door to exit the building
  • Follow Commands: Listen to the officers & don't argue
  • Hands-Free: Avoid carrying anything when you contact police and keep your hands visible
  • Be Patient: Officers still need to enter the building as well as get information about the alarm

Megaphone Procedures

See this document in Box to learn how to operate the megaphones: AIS Megaphone (Bullhorn) Training - For Emergency Use Only

Use: Megaphones/Bullhorns are intended for outdoor use and large crowd control only. The siren tone is extremely loud and should only be used in more open spaces.

Location: Megaphones reside in Main Library and WSEL reception storage inside file cabinets; batteries are kept separate.

Spill/flood Triage Kits

Locations:

  • Main 2nd Floor Reception Storage
  • WSEL 2nd Floor Staff Room

These kits contain towels and rolls of caution tape to stop clean minor spills/contain small floods.

  • Dirty towels can be placed with the dirty laptop bags in Main A122, if more towels are needed, contact Hayri or Rosa.

We still need to call Hayri/facilities or after-hours maintenance (520-621-3000) so they can deal with larger flooding/anything we cannot easily deal with ourselves.

Patron(s) Trapped in Elevator

General Protocols:
  • Make Contact: Staff make contact with the patron(s) who are trapped in the elevator to let them know that help will soon be on the way.
  • Ask Patron to Contact UAPD: Staff instruct the trapped patron(s) to use the phone inside the elevator to connect to UAPD's non-emergency response.
  • Call Facilities Emergency 24/7: (520) 621-3000 (normal business hours, after hours and weekends).
  • Follow-up with Helpline Ticket:  After the situation is resolved, staff should follow-up to report the situation and outcome.

Include Hayri in the email Helpline Ticket: hty@arizona.edu   You can also call Hayri if you choose at (520) 307-2820.
Who will respond to this situation?
  • During business hours Library:  Facilities staff are on duty and will respond to these calls and will follow up until the person is released.
  • Outside of normal business hours:  UA Facilities has a GMM (General Maintenance Mechanic) on call to respond to these calls.
