Libguides Editing Guidelines

How to add a table of contents for your guide

You can set up an “On this page” box near the top of the page to give a preview of what content is on the page, and quickly navigate the user to sections.

See an example here (not a Libguides page). This link takes the user to the “Sewing machines” page, then immediately jumps to the “Models & technical details” section.

Formatting

We’ll use anchor links to set up a table of contents. Follow this format:

On this page (Box)

  • Link to box #1

  • Link to box #2

  • Link to box #3

How to add a table of contents

  1. In the editing interface, navigate to the page you’d like to add the table of contents box. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click Add Box - Column 1.

  2. Name the box On this page. Choose Top of the column as the position.

  3. Scroll up to find the new box, and add Rich Text / HTML.

  4.  In the rich text editor, list all sections on the page using bullet points.

  5. Next, we’ll add the anchor links to the sections one by one. Navigate to each box on the page and click the pencil icon in the top right.

  6. Navigate to the Box Link & Widget Code tab, and copy the last segment in the Box Link URL, including the #.

  7. Go back to the On this page box’s rich text editor, add a link to the related bullet point to the box, and in the URL field, paste the URL segment that you just copied.

  8. Do the same for the other bullet points. When you’re done, save your changes.
