My NCBI Tools & the NIH Biosketch: Step 3 SciENcv

Instructions for investigators to create a new NIH Biosketch

What is SciENcv?

Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) is an optional online tool that helps researchers create a research profile that complies with the new NIH biosketch format. Access is through My NCBI--click on "Manage SciENcv."

SciENcv:

  • Generates & stores multiple biosketches for federal grant applications & progress reports
  • Imports publication citations from My Bibliography
  • Imports your Personal Profile and NIH grants from eRA Commons
  • Supports new NIH biosketch format, which is mandatory starting May 25, 2015
  • Provides a portal to ORCiD

Step 3: Create a Profile using SciENcv

From within My NCBI, find the SciENcv box, then "Click here to create a new CV" to choose your options:

  • Tab: the default is "From scratch"--click on the "From external source" tab*
  • Name: enter a name for your biosketch
  • Profile type: select New NIH Biosketch from dropdown menu
  • External source: choose eRA Commons from menu

*Note: once you've created your first biosketch, you will have a 3rd tab available to you: "From an existing profile."

Suggested strategy for SciENcv

  • Create one profile with new information from My Bibliography & eRA Commons
  • Keep it up-to-date and designate it as the template
  • Copy template as often as needed to edit to customize for individual grant applications
