Session 3: Data Management Plans & the NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy (Sept. 22, 2025)

Description: General overview of Data Management Plan (DMP) requirements and funder policies, with a specific focus on the NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy and its DMP requirements.

Time: 1 hour

Objectives: Understand the landscape of funder DMP requirements and common elements of DMPs.  Understand the basics of how DMP elements are evaluated.  Review the content in the UA Libraries' Data Management Plans Overview page.

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the intent of the NIH DMSP. 
  • Describe each of the 6 requirements of the NIH DMSP. 
  • Become familiar with resources and polices related to the NIH DMSP.
  • Identify specific areas of the NIH DMSP that relate to their department or lab.

Assignment Session 3

Pre-session assignment:

Review the content in the UA Libraries' Data Management Plans Overview page.

Review the main topics (Data Management & Sharing Policy Overview, Writing a Data Management and Sharing Plan, Budgeting..etc.) that are linked on the NIH page https://grants.nih.gov/policy-and-compliance/policy-topics/sharing-policies/dms and make note of any questions you might have on these topics.

Review the UA Guide to the NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy to identify campus support for questions related to the NIH DMP requirements.
