RefWorks Transition Guide

The University of Arizona Libraries subscription to RefWorks will end on March 31. 2021. All users who want to keep citations and PDFs stored in RefWorks must transfer them to an alternate citation manager. After March 31, UA users’ RefWorks accounts will be permanently inaccessible.

Due to declining budgets and the growing financial burden created by inflationary costs to subscription resources, UA Libraries must make ongoing cancellations to subscription-based materials. The decision to cancel RefWorks was based on the availability of free and low-cost alternatives and declining usage of the product.

Can I sign up and pay for an individual account with RefWorks?

  • No, unfortunately ProQuest RefWorks no longer offers individual subscriptions.

Why did you cancel RefWorks?

  • We decided to cancel based upon rising subscription costs combined with low usage along with the rising prevalence of free citation management tools.

Your plan of action to help migrate your citations to another management tool can include any of the following:

  • Use this RefWorks Transition Guide
  • Learn more about citation management tools like EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley [citation management guide coming soon]
  • Get in touch with your friendly librarians for support.

If I miss the March 2021 deadline to get my citations out of RefWorks, is there anything I can do?

  • Unfortunately no. You will be unable to access your account after (date here)

If I am a UA alumnus who has been using RefWorks, will I also lose my access?

  • Yes. You will have to migrate your RefWorks citations to one of the other citation managers, even if you changed your log-in email address to a non-UA account.
