Discussion Prompts

Ideas for discussion questions:

  • What part of your job are you most passionate about? How does this inform the rest of your work?
  • Talk about your path to your current position. Was it intentional? Serendipitous? Both?
  • What current trends in the field do you find to be the most interesting or important?
  • How do you approach work/life balance issues?
  • How would you describe the culture at UAL?  How do you fit within the institutional culture?
  • What are you best at and how did you build those skills?
  • How do you productively handle workplace conflict?
  • What tasks or aspects of your job do you find most difficult? How do you deal with them?
  • What professional development opportunities have you found to be most valuable?
  • Given my experience and interests, are there professional development ops you would recommend?
  • How do you approach professional networking? Is there a networking skill or tactic that you’ve found to be particularly useful?
  • What has surprised you about your current position?
  • What new skill or subject area are you interested in learning?
  • What are you hoping to accomplish in the coming year?
  • Discuss your five-year plan. What are realistic goals/expectations? Is your current work in line with your five-year plan? How are you moving toward those goals?
  • Where are you in the CS&P process? Are there specific challenges or aspects of the process that you would like to discuss?

Ideas for potential mentorship activities:

  • Create mentoring goals together
  • Share your career history with one another
  • Discuss challenging situations the mentee is facing
  • Read and review written work the mentee has produced
  • Listen to the same podcast or read an article and discuss
  • Discuss emerging trends in the profession
  • Review each other’s CVs and how you represent your accomplishments
  • Networking: Introduce mentee to other professionals who might be of help
  • Discuss your mentees strengths
  • Develop and share career bucket lists
  • Map out career future, (what mentee wants and how to get there)
