What is a Scholarly Article?

A scholarly article is different from popular press. Look for these features:

  • Published in an academic journal (not magazines or news outlets)
  • Reports on an original research project (not just a summary or overview)
  • Written by academics or scientists (not journalists)
  • Includes research methods or detailed analysis
  • Uses formal, academic language
  • Cites primary sources
  • Peer reviewed (reviewed by experts in the field before publication)
